The fascination of Danube infiltration

Danube source

  • Rivers & streams

So where does the Danube have its source? Is it the source of the Breg at St. Martin's Chapel near Furtwangen in the Black Forest, as one might claim according to hydrological criteria? Or is it the source of the small Donaubach (Danube brook) in Donaueschingen on the Baar?

The Danube doesn't make it easy. It probably has many sources from which it feeds. The source of the actual Danube stream, which in turn flows into the Brigach, rises in the middle of Donaueschingen, right next to the Fürstlich Fürstenberg Castle. For many, it is the actual source of "our" Danube.

In 1875, the spring was enclosed as a circular spring basin and twenty years later decorated with the "Mother Baar" group of figures. The source of the Danube stream is thus decidedly emphasized as the "source of the Danube".

Today, the confluence of the Brigach and Breg rivers on the eastern outskirts of Donaueschingen is considered to be the source of the Danube. From there, it flows 2811 kilometers to the Black Sea.
