Welcome to Sinkhole I

The Danube sinkhole in the Danube Mountains is a unique natural phenomenon: the Danube flows into two oceans. There are several sinkholes here. A large part of the Danube's water disappears into the ground at several points. The first major sinkhole of the Danube in the Danube sinkhole area is located in Immendingen, directly at the weir near the covered wooden bridge and close to the so-called Danube Riverside Park II. Depending on the water level, individual larger sinkholes can be seen at this first main sinkhole. Up to 8 square meters of Danube water per second temporarily disappears into the ground here in the riverbed of the Danube. Something quite extraordinary is happening in the Danube mountain region: between Immendingen and Fridingen, the Danube splits: Part of the Danube water sinks into the ground, while the other part—mostly—continues to flow above ground. This means that the Danube flows into two seas—the Black Sea and the North Sea! In the summer months, it often disappears completely. At most, when the water level is high enough, some of the Danube water still manages to bypass the Danube seepage through the two diversion tunnels near Immendingen and Fridingen. Sometimes, however, nothing remains. In that case, Vienna is no longer located on the Danube, but on the Krähenbach stream from the Tuttlingen district of Möhringen, the first tributary after the first full seepage point! The Danube seepage is an official geopoint of the **[UNESCO Global Geopark Swabian Alb](https://www.geopark-alb.de/geopark-erleben/reise-in-die-erdgeschichte/)**.
